these series of shots are from our hike to Franz Josef glacier. the day was overcast and the air was cool coming off the glacier. finn was also sick, so we tried to keep a hat on him, but he had different opinions.



most of the hike led over the rocky river bank, flanked by steep cliffs. some of which had little water falls:

we had to cross this river a few times. that gave finn the opportunity to throw a few rocks in:





if you look really closely at this next shot, you can see little black dots climbing the glacier. guide companies led glacier hikes. people without guides were supposed to stop about a kilometer from the actual glacier.


after our Franz Josef glacier hike, we drove to Lake Matheson. the guidebooks we had said there were impressive views of Mt. Cook with reflections in the lake. unfortunately, it was over cast and actually started to rain. finn was also napping. debbie stayed in the camper with him while i went and saw the lake. i hadn't intended to walk around the whole lake, but i wound up doing so. here are a few shots:


i think there's supposed to be a moutain behind these clouds:
